Abstract

1454336 Cyanonorbornene polymer composition SHOWA DENKO KK 19 March 1974 12176/74 Headings C3P and C3G A composition comprises (a) a polymer obtained by ring-opening polymerization of a cyanonorbornene of formula where W, X, Y and Z are hydrogen, cyano, substituent containing cyano, or hydrocarbyl, at least one being cyano or a substituent containing cyano, and (b) a further polymer which is (i) a vinyl chloride homo- or copolymer (ii) polystyrene or copolymers of a major proportion of styrene, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate, or (iii) a graft copolymer obtained by polymerizing styrene, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate on to an elastomer which is a butadiene rubber, an acrylic ester rubber, a chlorinated ethylene polymer, or an ethylene-propylene rubber. The resin (ii) may be present as an admixture with elastomers as specified for the base polymer in (iii). The polymers (a) may be copolymers with other cycloolefinic materials such as cyclic mono- and polyenes, and norbornene and derivatives thereof containing ester, ether, imide, aromatic, acid anhydride and halogen groups. The examples also disclose the ring-opening polymerization of 5-cyanonorbornene, 5 - cyano - 5 - methyl - norbornene and of a mixture of 5-cyano-norbornene and norbornene itself using hexachlorotungstenacetaldehyde diethyl acetal/Et 2 AlCl in dichloroethane and using hexene-1 as regulator (Examples 1, 14 and 18).
