Abstract

1452900 Controlling shearing operations BRITISH STEEL CORP 19 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973] 58745/73 Heading B3W Cross welds in continuously moving tube, formed by longitudinally seaming welded lengths of strip, are removed by detecting the presence of a crossweld, and on such detection passing signals representing predetermined longitudinal movements of the tube to a counter which, after receiving a predetermined number of signals, actuates cutting means to remove a length containing the detected cross weld. As shown, Fig. 1, strip 1 formed into a tube 4 and longitudinally welded in stands 2 and 3, respectively, is cooled at 5. The tube 4 is then engaged by a pulse generator wheel 7 in which is a light source connected to pass to a normally closed electronic gate (9), Fig. 2 (not shown), a train of pulses corresponding to the frequency with which apertures in the wheel circumference pass the light source. A pair of probes 10 in a roll stand 6 on detection of a crossweld, signal the gate (9) which opens to pass the signals from the wheel 7 to counters (11), (12) and (13). After receiving respective set numbers of pulses, the counters 11, 12 and 13 actuate a spray gun 15, and flying shears 17 and 19, respectively. The cutters may be discs or blades. Alternatively the counter 13 is omitted and a single flying shear having two spaced cutters is used. To remove sample lengths from the nose of the tube, the shear 17 is operated manually which actuates a switch 17a to open an electronic gate (22) to allow pulses from wheel 7 to pass to a counter 24 which actuates the cutter 19 when a set number of pulses has been received.
