Abstract
1451309 Labelling machines STACKPOLE MACHINERY CO 17 July 1975 [13 Dec 1974] 30006/75 Heading B8F Apparatus for picking labels from a magazine and delivering them to label applying equipment comprises a rotary drum encircled by upper and lower cam tracks, a slide movable radially of the drum and pivotally supporting a yoke on the outer end of which are rollers urged on to the cam tracks by a spring, a vacuum bar pivotally carried by the inner end of the yoke, and cam mechanism pivoting the bar on the yoke, so that at a point in the rotation of the drum, the bar pivot axis dwells and the bar is swing away from the magazine to remove a label. In Figs. 3 and 4, a shaft 1 drives drum 5 in which sliders 8 are urged apart by spring 11. A yoke 13 seats pivotally in a recess 12 in each slide, and has rollers 27, 29 bearing on fixed cam tracks on ring 3. A pin 16 extends between the arms 14, 15 of each yoke, passing through arcuate slot 17. A vacuum bar 35 is attached to the upper end of each pin, and the lower end of the pin supports lever arm 18 ending in roller 19 held against cam 6 on the drive shaft by spring 20. Each vacuum bar 35 is connected by hose 41 to a port 47 in a rotary valve ring 46 co-operating with an apertured upper stationary composite ring 48-49 connected to a source of vacuum, so that at the appropriate point, vacuum is applied to the bar, and thereafter maintained through a restricted passage whereby loss of vacuum if a label is not picked up will be reduced. For most of a revolution, roller 29 lies radially outside roller 27, as at the left of Fig. 5, and pin 16 occupies the trailing end of slot 17. Adjacent the magazine, however, at the right of Fig. 5, both outer cam tracks have an arcuate portion 75 centred on a dwell position for pin 16, preceded by portions 76 such that the pin moves to the leading end of the slot, the vacuum bar then being being adjacent the labels in the magazine and being connected to vacuum, and the pin then dwells, the slot moving over it as the yoke rolls round portion 75. Roller 19 moves over cam 6, and swings the bar about the pin, to withdraw the bar from the magazine, holding a label. The pin then resumes its travel carrying 'the bar round to present the label to a transfer drum also operating by vacuum.
