Abstract
1449065 Hydroxyalkyl acrylate polymer/expanded particle films DOW CHEMICAL CO 31 Oct 1973 50638/73 Heading C3C A film is produced by forming a film of a mixture of 30-95% by wt. of a film forming component comprising 75-100 wt. per cent of a hydroxy alkyl acrylate and from 5-25 wt. per cent of expandable thermoplastic microspherical particles having encapsulated therein a volatile liquid foaming agent and thermally expanding without rupturing said microspherical particles whilst exposing said film to high energy ionizing radiation in an inert atmosphere to polymerize said mixture. The mixture may contain up to 65 wt. per cent of a filler and also an unsaturated polyester resin, and the thermoplastic particles are preferably of a copolymer of acrylonitrile with vinylidene chloride or styrene. In the examples films of 2 hydroxy propyl acrylate containing neopentane as blowing agent and additionally containing CaCO 3 , n-butyl acrylate, degraded cellulose acetate, a vinyl ester of an unsaturated polyester as additives and curing by passing through a beam of 2MEV electrons to give a dose of 0À5 megarads in an inert (oxygen free) nitrogen atmosphere.
