Abstract
1448145 Preserving agricultural products RHONE-POULENC SA 10 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 42500/73 Heading A2D A process for preserving agricultural products comprises (a) placing said products, which may or may not be positioned in a chamber defined in (d) below, which chamber may be sealed (permanently or temporarily) or unsealed, in a vacuum container and lowering the pressure in the container to 1 to 10 mm. Hg absolute, (b) adjusting the temperature of the products to 0 to 15‹C, (c) restoring the pressure in the container to atmospheric by introducing an inert gas or a gas mixture containing an inert gas into the container, (d) sealing the unsealed chamber, if used in step (a), and (e) storing the products at 0‹ to 20‹C in a sealed chamber having (i) walls which are impermeable to the inert gas and (ii) a selective gas exchanger capable of keeping in said chamber a controlled atmosphere corresponding to the respiratory changes of said products at 0‹ to 20‹C, said gas exchanger consisting of a silicone membrane whose surface area is 0.1 to 0.30 m<SP>2</SP> per m<SP>3</SP> of usable volume of the chamber and whose permeability to the inert gas is the same as that of a pure membrane of the same silicone of thickness 50Á, said chamber being sealed under conditions such that the products are in contact with an atmosphere the same as that with which they are in contact at the end of step (c). The chamber is suitably a bag with a window comprising the silicone membrane. The temperature may be lowered by lowering the pressure adiabatically. The process is particularly applicable to the storage of pears, apples, spinach, asparagus or cherries.
