Abstract

1444353 Coating compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Oct 1973 [4 Oct 1972] 45698/72 Headings C3P and C3R Coating compositions comprise (i) a dispersion of particles of a film-forming addition polymer derived from one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers in an inert organic liquid in which the disperse polymer is insoluble, the dispersion being stabilized by a polymeric stabilizer comprising an anchoring component which associates with the particles of disperse polymer and a component solvated by the organic liquid which provides a stabilizing steric barrier around the particles and (ii) in an amount of 0À1 to 0À6%, calculated as aluminium metal and based on the weight of addition polymer solids, an organo-aluminium complex obtained by reacting an aluminium alkoxide with a #- keto carboxylic acid ester. Component (ii) prevents flocculation of pigments present in the composition which can cause an undesired rise in viscosity of the composition and formation of a thixotropic gel. Component (ii) may be, for example, a reaction product of aluminium isopropoxide, isobutoxide and/or sec.-butoxide with ethyl acetoacetate; unreacted alkoxide groups in the product are suitably condensed with water. In examples the addition polymer used is a styrene/methyl methacrylate/n-butyl methacrylate / 2 - ethylhexyl acrylate / 2- hydroxyethyl acrylate / methacrylic acid copolymer. Optional components which may be included in the compositions include solvents for the disperse polymer, supplementary filmforming polymers, cross-linking resins, e.g. etherified melamine-formaldehyde condensates. In addition to pigments, the compositions may also contain fillers, extenders or plasticizers. In the examples the compositions are coated on to metal panels used for automobiles and on to chromate-treated aluminium panels.
