Abstract
1444166 Preparing perylenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride pigments BASF AG 23 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972 26 Oct 1972] 49255/73 Heading C4P Deeply coloured 3,4,9,10 - perylenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride pigment is prepared by dry grinding the raw pigment optionally in presence of a solid grinding aid to provide ground pigment having an average primary particle size of 0.01 to 1 Á which is then treated with 80- 95% by weight sulphuric acid, a primary or tertiary aromatic amine which is liquid at the treatment temperature or with a polar aprotic organic solvent as a swelling agent to improve the tinctorial strength of the pigment after which the swelling agent is removed. Dimetuylformamide, quinoline, p-chloroaniline, anisidine and phenetidine may be used as preferred swelling agents at 50-200‹ C. With sulphuric acid the treatment is preferably carried out at 10-100‹ C. or at room temperature. The dry grinding is preferably carried out with iron balls 0À1 to 3 cm. in diameter in a ball mill or vibration mill and the swelling process is carried out until the average primary particle size has increased 2-5 times and is preferably within the range 0À05 to 0À1 Á. The weight ratio pigment: swelling agent is preferably 1 : 0À5 to 1 :5. The pigments are used to colour nitro-, cellulose-, polyester-, epoxy resin-, silicone- and alkyd resin lacquers and varnishes and to colour p.v.c., polyethylene, polystyrene, polyurethanes, polyamides and printing inks.
