Abstract

1443629 Laminates SCOTT PAPER CO 18 Dec 1974 54650/74 Heading B5N A soft, absorbent, fibrous sheet material comprises two fibrous webs 15, 16 joined together with inner surfaces facing each other, each web having a plurality of crests 21, 29 and depressions 22, 28 on its inner surface, the crests on each web being positioned between the crests on the other web and extending beyond the crests on the other web toward and spaced from the depressions on the other web and the two webs being connected to each other at locations 20 intermediate the crests and depressions on at least one of the webs. The fibrous webs which may be of paper, may each be embossed separately on first and second rotatably mounted embossing rolls, e.g. of steel, in nipping relationship with first and second rotatably mounted press rolls respectively, each provided with an elastomer cylindrical cover, and carried on the embossing rolls to a position where successive embossing knuckles of the first embossing roll contact successive knuckles of the second embossing roll at locations along the sides of the knuckles of at least one of the embossing rolls so that the webs are connected together. The contact between the knuckles is made with sufficient pressure to mechanically weld the webs together at selected portions by causing intermeshing of the fibres of one web with the fibres of the other. By applying sufficient nip pressure the webs may be perforated by the intermeshing knuckles in addition to being joined together, the knuckles on the embossing rolls may be arranged in rows diagonally disposed with respect to the embossing roll axis. The use of an adhesive may replace or supplement mechanical welding of the webs. The knuckles may have an equallysloped straight line taper along their contact sides so that each web is connected to the other web on two sides of each crest or the knuckles may be such that they contact only one knuckle on the other embossing roll, joining the webs only on one side of the crests. Alternatively the knuckles an one roll may be such that they do not taper outwardly, joining the edge of the crests of one web to areas on the other web intermediate the crests and depressions.
