1441877 Bis - substituted - # - halo succinamides STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 11 Sept 1974 [12 Nov 1973 9 April 1974] 39548/74 Heading C2C Bis - substituted - # - halo - succinamides of general formula in which X is Cl or Br; R 1 and R 3 is H, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 haloalkyl wherein halo is F, Br or Cl; C 2 -C 6 alkenyl; C 2 -C 6 alkynyl or benzyl; R 2 and R 4 are H, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, C 2 -C 6 haloalkenyl wherein halo is Cl or Br; C 2 -C 8 alkoxyalkyl, C 2 -C 6 alkynyl, C 3 -C 6 cycloalkyl, furfuryl or tetrahydrofurfuryl; R 1 and R 2 taken together with the N-atom form a C 2 -C 8 non-aromatic heterocyclic ring; R 3 and R 4 taken together with the N-atom form a C 2 -C 6 non-aromatic heterocyclic ring; provided that when R 1 to R 4 are each alkyl then one of R 1 and R 2 and one of R 3 and R 4 is other than methyl and further provided that only one of R 1 or R 2 is H and only one of R 3 or R 4 is H, are prepared by reacting an α-halosuccinoyl chloride with a primary or secondary amine in a ratio of 1 to 4 at -30‹C to + 10‹C or in a ratio of 1 to 2 in the presence of an acid acceptor, e.g. triethylamine. Amongst numerous examples the compounds bis-N,N-diallyl-α- bromosuccinamide, N,N<SP>1</SP> - dibenzyl - α- bromosuccinamide and 1,2 - bis - (N,N<SP>1</SP> - piperidinylcarbonyl)ethane are prepared. Herbicidal compositions comprise a compound of general Formula I in admixture with an inert carrier or diluent.
