Abstract

1441862 Lubricated ropes P P RIGGS 22 July 1974 [5 Oct 1973] 32386/74 Heading D1T A rope having a lubricated core 16 and a plurality of lubricated wire strands 14 surrounding the core 16, has a thermoplastic material 55 filling the spaces between the strands 14 to retain lubricant in the core 16 and in the strands 14, the thermoplastic material 55 not extending beyond a circumscribing circle contacting the outermost strands of the wire rope. In Fig. 1 the core 16 can be a plurality of strands 18 of wire or fibre material such as hemp, a heavy viscous lubricant 19 surrounding the strands 18. The wine strands 14 are each formed of a plurality of wires 12 with lubricant 19 between adjacent wires. Prior to the thermoplastic material 55 being applied, the rope is heated to a temperature of from 38‹C to 134‹C, the outermost strands being maintained spaced apart from each other. Fig. 2 (not shown) is a longitudinal sectional view through a strand gap controller and an extruder head that can be used to carry out the method and to make the wire rope.
