1441790 Suitcases ANTLER Ltd 30 Sept 1974 [6 Nov 1973] 51427/73 Heading A4G A method of constructing a suitcase having a girdle 11, Fig. 2, reinforced by a stiffening band 40, e.g. of spring steel, comprises positioning on the girdle at the required location of the band a masking strip 28 of a width exceeding that of the band 40 and securing the strip along one longitudinal margin 30 only; stitching a wear or protective panel 32 along each of its transverse margins 34 to the external surface of the base or back wall of the girdle to overlap the ends of the strip 28; placing the band 40 in position behind the strip 28; and covering the band 40 with the strip 28 and securing the strip to the girdle 11 along its other longitudinal margin so as to encase and locate the stiffening band 40. In one embodiment the girdle has slits 24 through which the ends of the band 40 pass from outside to inside the suitcase thus by-passing the lines of stitching 36. In a second embodiment the band 40, Fig. 5, and the masking strip 28' are located inside the suitcase and the masking strip has notches 46, or interruptions at the lines of stitching 36 to enable it to be raised for positioning of the band 40 prior to stitching the second longitudinal edge of the masking strip in place. "Stitching" is intended to include also welding and securing by adhesive. The girdle and masking strip may be of p.v.c. or polypropylene.
