Abstract
1338162 Spray producers GRACO Inc 18 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970] 2249/71 Heading B2F In the airless spraying of liquids such as paint the paint is formed into an annular converging stream by a needle valve assembly 25 in the passage leading to the outlet nozzle 20 of the spray gun, this annular stream, in converging at or near the outlet nozzle, causing different portions of the stream of liquid to impinge and improving the resultant spray pattern. As shown the needle valve consists of a valve stem 39 with a truncated conical section 38 which cooperates with a valve seat 26 to control the liquid flow, the seat having a tapered entrance part and a part with less taper through which the needle valve projects as shown when the valve is closed, the angle of the section 38 of the needle being greater than that of the part of the valve seat 26 with the lesser taper. The liquid to be sprayed is supplied under pressure to the chamber 36 from which it flows as a convergent annular stream into a chamber 22 leading to the outlet 20 when the needle is retracted to the position shown as a broken line in the Figure. The retraction of the needle to open the valve and allow the spraying of the liquid is caused by the pressing of a trigger on the spraying device which is in the form of a pistol (Fig. 1, not shown) the trigger opening an air valve to supply air under pressure to one side of a piston -arrangement to open the valve against the action of a spring, the degree to which it opens being adjustable by an adjustable stop at the rear of the pistol. A safety stop to prevent unintentional depression of the trigger is also provided.
