Abstract

1334758 Check-out counters R C A CORPORATION 19 April 1971 [20 March 1970] 24179/71 Heading A4T Article-handling apparatus is applied to the check-out counters of supermarket stores 1 to n, Fig. 1 each store being provided with a scanning line concentrator 14 connected via reversing modems 18, 20 to a computer 16 and memory file 40 storing prices of articles, inventory status, availability of trading stamps, taxes on articles and the like. Customer 106, Fig. 2 places articles 52 on conveyor 50 driven by motor 56, Fig. 3 started on depressing a start button in register 112, the articles being carried up to the end of the conveyor which is stopped on the article interrupting light between a source 60 and photodiode 62. A checker 100 moves the article, which carries a human and machine readable label consisting eg of numerals superimposed on black and white annuli, across a slot 80 and into a bag 74. A light source, e.g. laser 82 has its beam reflected off rotating multifaced mirror 84 to scan slot 80, the reflection from the label being received by reader 86. Signals from the reader are fed through an electronic circuit containing a validity checker to the computer and file 40 and return signals print the price on tape 120 and indicate it on display 104, one of two loudspeakers 116 indicating whether the article has been properly scanned and the other whether the file 40 does not contain the number on the label, Each store has a teleprinter 26 communicating with the computer and file. The conveyor may be controlled manually, and very small or large articles are recorded manually on the register. The computer may operate a cash drawer, and a change and stamp dispenser.
