Abstract

1332064 Propylene-ethylene block copolymers and preparation KOPPERS CO Inc 21 Oct 1971 [17 Dec 1970] 49066/71 Heading C3P A polypropylene-polyethylene block copolymer is obtained by (a) polymerizing propylene in a liquid diluent and a 3TiCl 3 .AlCl 3 /R n AlX 3-n catalyst (R is alkyl, X is halogen, n is 2 or 3), and optionally hydrogen, to form a propylene prepolymer reaction mass, (b) removing at least a major portion of the unpolymerized propylene from the said reaction mass, and (c) adding ethylene, hydrogen, and a tetra-alkyltitanate to the said reaction mass whereby the ethylene polymerizes on to the preformed polypropylene to form the block copolymer. Various desirable ranges of properties of the copolymers are set out and particularly stress crack resistance, stiffness values, various Melt Index figures for powder and injection moulded products, impact strength, flow and brittleness temperature. In examples, the catalysts are 3TiCl 3 .AlCl 3 - (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl together with #:(OC 3 H 7 ) 4 .
