Abstract
1330266 Emulsion polymerization of unsaturated hydroxyesters SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 28 March 1972 14511/72 Addition to 1266159 Heading C3P The invention is a modification of that in Specification 1,266,159. It comprises a batch process for emulsion copolymerizing (A) a hydroxy group containing ester of formula wherein R is an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated group, and R<SP>1</SP> is a group free of ethylenic unsaturation, with (B) at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the comonomers and initiator being continuously or intermittently added during polymerization to a vessel heated to polymerization temperature, the process being characterized by the fact that a minor amount of a polymerization inhibitor (relative to total initiator) is already present in the aqueous phase in the reactor at the beginning of the polymerization. Group R-C(O)- of monomer (A) may be derived from acids such as acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, cinnamic, maleic and fumaric acids, and group R<SP>1</SP>-C(O)- may be derived from saturated acids such as p-tert-butyl benzoic, butyric and lauric, and also saturated acids having a tertiary alpha carbon atom, especially those of formula wherein R 1 is -CH 3 and R 2 and R 3 are C 1-16 alkyl. Examples of these are pivalic, alpha,- alpha-di-methyl decanoic, and alpha,alpha-dimethyl hexadecanoic acids. Examples of (B) are ethylene, styrene, vinylidene chloride, dibutylmaleate, vinyl acetate methyl methacrylate and vinyl chloride. The latter is preferred and exemplified in the example in which it is copolymerized with in which R<SP>1</SP> is a C 9-11 tertiary alkyl group. Inhibitors specified are benzoquinone, hydroquinone, nitro- and nitroso benzene, toluhydroquinone, duroquinone, p-dinitrobenzene and, in particular, 4-hydroxyanisole. The usual initiators and emulsifiers are used. In the example, the copolymer emulsion produced is made into a curable paint by admixture with a melamine/ formaldehyde resin, TiO 2 , dibutyltin dimaleate, maleic acid, and methylisobutyl ketone.
