Abstract
1329079 Refining lead AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO 17 Aug 1971 38640/71 Heading C7D Tellurium is removed from lead by adding sodium, potassium or mixtures thereof to a molten pool of the lead, and agitating the pool to incorporate the tellurium into a slag layer which forms on the surface of the pool. The lead should have been softened, or not require softening, prior to the removal of tellurium, which may be followed by a desilvering process. The alkali metal may be added in solid or molten form and may be added as a master alloy. The pool is mechanically stirred, but the agitation should be discontinued before an undesirable amount of the removed tellurium is reincorporated into the molten lead. This reincorporation can also be retarded by inducting the process under an atmosphere of nitrogen or natural gas. In order to assist the recovery of tellurium from the slag, a layer containing sodium or potassium hydroxide may be formed on the surface of the pool prior to addition of the alkali metal. The process may be carried out at temperatures between the melting-point of lead and 1200‹F, preferably at 800-850‹F. The alkali metal is used in an amount equivalent to 0À3 to 0À8 lbs sodium for every 1b of tellurium. Selenium and sulphur may be removed coincidentally.
