Abstract
1328403 Removing SO 2 from gases BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 19 Oct 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 49549/70 Heading C1A SO 2 is removed from gases by scrubbing with a solution containing Mg, precipitating hydrated MgSO 3 crystals from the solution, and thermally decomposing the crystals into MgO and SO 2 . The gases may initially be passed through an electrostatic precipitator or wet scrubber to remove solids, and cooled by spraying with water. Absorption of SO 2 may be effected at 150-160‹ F. Precipitation is effected by adding MgO or Mg(OH) 2 to produce crystals of size 75-300 Á., the solution being recycled to the absorption stage. The crystals may be preheated to 200‹ F. to dehydrate MgSO 3 .6H 2 O to MgSO 3 .3H 2 O, and then calcined at 1400-1800‹ F in a fluidized bed. Water vapour may be condensed from the gases and used to wash the crystals. The MgO may be slurrried with water and recycled, part to the absorption step and part to the precipitation step.
