Abstract

1328497 Artificial knee joints NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 15 Oct 1970 [16 Sept 1969] 45697/69 Heading A5R An artificial knee joint comprises a femoral member hinged to a tibial member, such as by a journal 14, the femoral member being formed with a groove 22 in its anterior and inferior surfaces, said groove being adapted to cooperate with the posterior contour of the natural patella. The depth of the groove preferably increases from the distal to the proximal end. The degree of flexion of the joint is limited by a ridge 18 on the tibial member to an angle of from 100‹ to 140‹. The femoral and tibial members are provided with stems (1) and (2) respectively, Fig. 1, (not shown), for insertion in the marrow cavities of the natural bones which stems may be provided with irregularities such as wings 4 on their surfaces. The stems are arranged to be non-collinear in the anterior view and when in the fully extended position the stem of the femoral member is in a vertical plane passing through the centre of gravity of the relevant half of the body divided vertically and forward of that containing the stem of the tibial member. The prosthesis may be made from cobalt-chromium alloy or titanium. High molecular weight polyethylene may be used for bushes (27) Fig. 5, (not shown).
