1325304 Laminates AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO Ltd 9 Oct 1970 [16 Oct 1969] 50839/69 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and F2] A layer of sintered powdered material is applied to an internal surface of an article which is cylindrical, part cylindrical or shaped otherwise to form a closed or open loop by applying a layer of powdered material to one side of a flexible layer of backing material, sintering the powdered layer and then securing the opposite side of the flexible layer of backing material to the internal surface. The layer of sintered material may comprise a number of discrete masses of rectangular or circular shape spaced from one another. In Fig. 1 a brake band 10 comprises a main body 11 having a part-cylindrical internal surface 12 which defines an open loop and secured thereto by spot welding a brake lining 13 comprising a flexible strip 14 of steel sheet backing material having discrete masses 15 of sintered powdered friction material adhering to the surface thereof and projecting radially inwardly therefrom. Ears 16 define recesses 17 so that in use operating means which engage in the recesses are actuated to draw ears 16 towards one another and bring the discrete masses 15 of friction material into frictional engagement with a rotatable member mounted for rotation within the space defined by the brake band 10. Brake lining 13 may be produced by positioning strip 14 in the base of a mould, applying a layer of powdered material to the surface of the strip, compressing the powdered material and heating to effect sintering. The mould may be arranged to form a continuous layer of sintered material or may be arranged to form a number of discrete masses of sintered material having curved form.
