Abstract

1324311 Tracheal tube J ABOUAV and T-N FINLAY 4 Jan 1972 [18 Jan 1971] 309/72 Headings A5R and A5T A tracheal tube with a cuff which inflates itself during insufflation comprises a cannula 11 with open ends and formed by a cylindrical wall which has no holes therein; and a cuff 12 carried by the cannula 11 intermediate the ends thereof, the cuff 12 having a portion 12c intermediate its ends which is flexible, generally tubular, radially-epandable, and when expanded is substantially larger in diameter than the cannula 11 so that an annular chamber (13), Fig. 4 (not shown) is formed therebetween, the cuff 12 also having circumferentially-spaced air openings 14 in communication with the chamber (13). The air openings 14 are located, at least in part, in a cuff portion 12d of linearly-increasing cross-sectional area. In the unexpanded state, the maximum diameter of the intermediate cuff portion 12c is not substantially less than that of the tracheal lining. The cuff 12 also includes an annular underfolded portion 12e which provides slack for the intermedate portion 12c and maintains the chamber (13). The tube may be inserted through the mouth of a tracheostomy. The cannula 12 is preferably of flexible rubbery material, although a more rigid material (e.g. polyvinylchloride) may be used. The intermediate cuff portion 12c may be of latex rubber. The end 12b, and possibly also the end 12a, of thecuff are sealed to the cannula 11 by the elasticity of the cuff material or by adhesive.
