Abstract

1322949 Cellular plastics articles IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 41039/70 Heading B5A Cellular plastics articles having a hard surface layer, e.g. chair shells, panels, floats, lifebelts, are moulded by placing one or more cellular bodies in a mould to occupy the bulk of the mould and spaced from the mould walls and then filling, e.g. by injection, the space with a liquid foamable plastics mix, wherein, during foaming, the mould walls are kept below the boiling point of the blowing agent to inhibit foaming at the surface and produce a high-density surface layer. The foamable mix and cellular bodies are preferably of the same composition, e.g. polyurethane. The or each cellular body, which may also be polystyrene, may have ridges &c. acting to space it from the mould wall. Reinforcement, e.g. glass fibre sheets or wire mesh, may be inserted in the space between the body and mould wall.
