1318004 Sewing machine ROSSO PIETRO & C Snc M PROTASONI and T PROTASONI 19 April 1971 [17 Feb 1970] 22002/71 Heading D1G A method of attaching a binding strip 1 to a knitted article 7 on a linking machine comprises forming a knitted binding strip 1 with auxiliary longitudinal tags 2, 3 extending from opposite edges of the strip, running the knitted article and strip on to the point 6 of a linking machine in such a manner that the strip takes a channel shape with at least one of the tabs 2, 3 lying along side the inner channel face and the marginal portion 7b of the knitted article extending within the channel, and forming a chain stitch 8 joining opposite faces of the strip 1 to the knitted article. The tabs are preferably knitted from a yarn other than that used for the body of the strip, preferably elasticated yarn. A Linking machine (Fig. 7) for carrying out the method comprises three guides A, B and C, guide A being fixed to the fixed plate 11 of the machine while guides B and C are conneoted to a fixed track on the machine by rollers (34 Figs. 14 and 17 not shown) to be movable around the ring of points 6. Guide A (Figs. 7 and 9) comprises a U-shaped member 17, a cover plate 20 and a top plate 22 which together receive and guide the strip I and its tag 15, 16 in an overlying position on to the points 6, which enter a groove 28 in a roller 27 journalled on the guide, the roller completing the impalement as the work moves past. The guide C comprises two plates 44, 45 which with a base member (46 Fig. 17 not shown) constitutes a guide for the edge of the article 7, the edge being impaled on the points 6 as the edge passes a roller 47 also provided with a point embracing groove (47a). The roller and plate 45 are swingable outwardly about an axis (53) to open the guide and are held in the closed position by a catch (54). The guide B comprises two plates 32, 29 and a grooved roller 40 guiding the other tab (10, Fig. 12 not shown) to impale the second edge of the strip on to the points. A cutter (42, Fig. 16 not shown) may be incorporated to sever the thickened portion on the second tab. A modification of guide A is also described (Fig. 18-20 not shown). This embodiment includes a groove guiding a thickened portion of the tab, a rotating work urging brush (56) and a rotating cutter 58.
