Abstract
1315002 Disc brakes H KLAUE 4 May 1970 [5 May 1969] 21381/70 Heading F2E A disc brake assembly comprises a fixed housing 2, 3 having a shaft 1 rotationally mounted therein, a pair of brake discs 9, 10 mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith and for linear movement parallel to the axis of the shaft, friction surfaces 14, 15 on the outer side of each brake disc, braking surfaces fixed with respect to the housing and located adjacent each of the friction surfaces such that when the discs are moved away from each other they frictionally engage the fixed braking surfaces to brake the shaft, an actuating disc 13 mounted between the brake discs and having opposite radial surfaces which face the inner surfaces of the brake discs and form therewith a set of facing surfaces, each set of facing surfaces including raised portions 16 ... 19 on at least one side of the set, and rollable elements 22, 23 between the surfaces of the set. When the actuating disc is rotated relative to the brake discs, the rollable elements engage the raised portions to urge the brake discs away from the actuating disc and against the fixed braking surfaces to brake the shaft. There are actuating means for acting upon the actuating disc to limit rotational movement thereof relative to the brake discs, and the shaft includes a plurality of splines la extending parallel to the shaft axis, the brake discs having inwardly projecting teeth 8 engaging between the splines. There are cavities 4, 5 in the housing for allowing the circulation of cooling liquid therethrough. As shown, the discs 9, 10 are urged towards each other by springs 40, and the disc 13 is supported on the shaft by roller bearings 12 which engage a sleeve 11 splined on the shaft. The rollers 22, 23 are located by cages 20, 21. One or more hydraulic piston-cylinder devices 27 1 , 27 2 incorporating friction linings 25, 26 are engageable with the disc 13 and the latter may be engaged by a piston 34 having a friction lining 35 and manually operated by a lever 33. In modifications, each part of the housing of aluminium or magnesium consists of inner and outer parts between which are spiral cooling liquid paths and the disc 13 is restrained against rotation by an electromagnetic device encircling the outer periphery of the disc, (b) the disc 13 is acted upon by pneumatic or hydraulic pistoncylinder devices in the manner shown in Fig. 1, and the shaft 1 connects a change-speed gear with a rear axle of a vehicle, (c) a hollow brake lever 90, Fig. 9, the interior of which is in communication with the coolant liquid spaces of the housing, is pivoted into engagement with the disc 13 by a tappet 102 acted on by a membrane 101 subject to pressure fluid, the removal of which allows a spring 103 to urge the lever away from the disc, and (d) the housing supports a crank-axle-carrying tube, Fig. 12, attached to a crank-axle-bearing-tube 128, the interior of the former being divided by a partition 150 into flow and return passages connected through valves 152, 154 to a coolant reservoir 145 carried by the bearing tube and from which cooling liquid is circulated by a pump through the housing coolant spaces. The friction linings may be mounted on the housing and be of graphite, powdered metal or sintered ceramic.
