Abstract
1314884 Electro-depositing W or W-Re MULLARD Ltd 28 May 1970 25789/70 Heading C7B In manufacturing a rotary target electrode for an X-ray tube, a metal layer of tungsten or tungsten-rhenium is electro-deposited on an electrically conductive substrate disc from a bath of fused salts comprising a mixture of:- (a) an alkali metal tungstate or a mixture of an alkali metal tungstate and an alkali metal acidic rhenium salt, (b) an alkali metal borate or phosphate, and (c) tungstic oxide or a mixture of tungstic and rhenium oxides. Specified conditions are:- a substrate of W, Mo, W-Mo, an alloy based on W or Mo or pre-plated carbon; a W anode; a bath at 850-1000‹C. comprising (a) Na Li Wo 4 and optionally sodium lithium perrhenate, (b)Na Li B 2 O 4 or sodium lithium phosphate and (c) WO 3 and optionally rhenium oxide; a N 2 atmosphere; and electro-deposition using a current density exceeding 0À01A/cm<SP>2</SP>, e.g. using periodic reverse plating with identical forward and reverse currents of 5 A/cm<SP>2</SP> for 10 secs and 1 sec respectively, to produce a deposited layer at least 100 microns thick. Deposited layers may be smoothed by grinding. Specification 777591 is referred to.
