Abstract

1312764 Earth stress transducers A C TALBOTT 6 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 6547/71 Heading G1N Apparatus for measuring stresses in earth or concrete comprise a strain gauge transducer which is to be located in a borehole, consisting of a cylindrical, expandable plug c, Fig.1, gripped between rigid end plates a, a, f and carrying resistance strain gauges 1, 4 on its circumferential surface. The unit is located in the borehole and nut g tightened to increase the diameter of the plug c, whereby the strain gauges 1, 4 are effectively gripped by the wall of the borehole. The gauges are oriented to measure circumferential and axial strain. An additional strain gauge element 5 is mounted on an unstrained end plate k to allow compensation for temperature variations.
