Abstract
1305391 Artificial elbow joint NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 6 Feb 1970 [18 Feb 1969] 8855/69 Heading A5R A prosthetic elbow joint comprises a first stem I integral with a base portion 3 forming a hinge part and a second stem 10 having a hinge part 11, projections of the first stem 1 in a first plane passing through the axis of the joint and also on a second plane passing through the hinge part and orthogonal to the first plane, being curved, the free end of the first stem 1 having a longitudinally axis parallel to and spaced from the second plane, and the second stem being curved in the second plane when the joint is assembled. The cross-sections of the stems 1, 10 are trapesoidal and rectangular respectively although the end of the stem 19 during the hinge part 11 is flared. Both stems have their edges rounded. The base portion 3 has a flat face 6 and on the opposite face 5 a. central flange 8 with a transverse bore 9. The hinge part 11 has a general U-shape (Fig. 6, not shown) with a base 13 and two limbs 14 partially interconnected by a chamfered web 15 and each having a bore 16. The stems 10, 1 have lugs 12 and a groove 7, respectively, and are cemented in the intermedullary canals of the humurus and ulna respectively. The hinge parts are connected by a pin through the aligned bores 9, 16. The prosthesis is made of metal, e.g. chrome, cobalt alloy or stainless steel.
