Abstract
1302217 Combustion apparatus e.g for gas turbine engines GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 13 April 1970 [17 April 1969] 17374/70 Headings F4T TM1 TP3D and TLUD The invention relates to combustion apparatus and particularly to means for supplying a fuel/air mixture thereto. The invention is described with reference to combustion apparatus of a gas turbine engine which comprises an outer casing 20 and an inner flame tube 12 which comprises upstream walls 26 defining an air inlet 32 also an inner dome 16, the walls 26 and dome 16 defining a chamber in which is disposed the air and fuel mixing device 34. The device 34 comprises a chamber formed by end-walls 50, 52 and a peripheral wall 48 of involute form, air being supplied into the chamber through an inlet duct 36 having an upstreamfacing inlet opening connected to the air inlet 32. Fuel is supplied into the duct 36 from a supply pipe 44, the fuel and air swirling in the volute chamber 46 and passing through an assembly of swirl vanes 58 to the centre of the chamber from which the mixture discharges through the opening 38 in the downstream end-wall 52 into the flame tube. The fuel forms a ring 64 on the inner surface of the upstream wall 50, the ring of fuel projecting towards the outlet 38, fuel being sheared from the ring in the form of small particles. The swirling air/fuel mixture discharging into the flame tube is indicated at 40 and a recirculating flow within the swirling flow 40 is indicated at 68.
