Abstract

1302285 Display devices; visible signalling apparatus FERRANTI Ltd 20 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 35018/70 Headings G4F and G5C A display device comprises two interleaved laminar elements 12, 13 pivotally mounted about substantially coincident axes, each axis being symmetrically located with respect to and coplanar with an element, each half of each surface of the elements being of different appearance, a permanent magnet 18, 19 secured to each element and means 20 for applying an external magnetic field to position the elements such that a selected half surface of each element is displayed and the others are obscured. A four colour indicator comprises two circular discs 12, 13 supported on sleeves 15 mounted on a shaft 10. The faces of each half disc are coloured differently with facing halves the same. U-shaped electromagnets 20 with reversibly magnetizable polepieces are placed adjacent the magnets 18, 19 each having its magnetic axis in the plane of the disc. Applying pulses successively to the electromagnets moves the discs into one of four positions. Pins 23 extending from each disc prevents them reaching the magnetic axis from which they cannot be moved by the electromagnets. In another embodiment one disc is replaced by semicircular elements pivoted on shafts carried by the other disc. Three or more discs may be mounted on a common axis and a number of indicators may be mounted in a frame to form a character display.
