1300806 Punching apparatus J W LYON 1 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 41765/70 Heading B4B [Also in Division B6] A machine for binding sheets comprises means for punching a stack of sheets with a row of holes corresponding to the positions of arcuate tongues of an arcuate binding member formed of resilient synthetic plastic, andis also provided with devices whereby the tongues are spread apart to a position in which the stack can be threaded thereon and then released to bind the sheets. The binding member is formed as described in U.S.A. Specification 1,970,285. Punching or perforating.-The stack of sheets is inserted in an opening 151, Fig. 2, at the front of a casing 23, and aligned by an adjustable side guide 179 and an adjustable front guide (149, Fig. 8, not shown), so that the stack edge lies beneath a number of punches 57 passing through a guide and stripper member 61. Each punch has a narrowed part 57A, Fig. 7, passing through a slot 79 in the bottom 73 of a box-like pressure bar 69. The bar 69 is raised by springs 96 and lowered to effect punching by movement of a handle (49, Fig. 1, not shown) in one direction to rotate a main shaft 101 carrying gear segments engaging racks 97 in the bar 69. A pin 81 slidable in the bar 69 is provided for each punch so that in the pin position shown in Fig. 2, the associated punch is operative, and in a withdrawn position of a pin its punch dees not punch the sheets. The punches 57 are shorter from the centre outwards so that the punching takes place progressively from the centre outwards.
