Abstract

1300730 Cold liquefied gas storage tanks CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd 23 Aug 1971 [14 Oct 1970] 48749/70 Addition to 1203496 Heading F4P In a cold liquefied gas, e.g. methane storage tank as claimed in parent Specification 1,203,496 wherein the tank 4 is surrounded by heat insulation material 7 lining the inner face of an outer rigid shell 2, e.g. the inner hull of a ship and wherein the upper less stressed portion B of the heat insulation material is of foamed plastics material, e.g. polyurethane sprayed in situ on the inner face of shell 2 whilst the lower more highly stressed portion C of the insulation is of load bearing material, the latter comprises members C1, e.g. of balsa wood faced with plywood rigidly fixed to and spaced over the shell bottom with the intervening spaces C 2 filled with sprayed-on rigid foam plastics material; the junction planes between C1 and C2 being inclined to the shell bottom. As shown tank 4 rests on pinewood blocks 17 supported by insulation members C1. The insulation material B at each side of the shell 2 which is chamfered is of nylon mesh and polyurethane except at the corners D where the insulation comprises balsa panels held by wood strips 9. The top insulation A comprises fibreglass 21 faced with plywood 22. The tank has ribs 5, a bulkhead 6 and keyforming brackets 18, 19 at opposite sides of blocks 17.
