Abstract

1399451 Electron multiplier G W BALL 8 Sept 1972 [8 June 1971] 19445/71 Heading H1D An electron multiplier comprises a chain of dynodes mounted on a stack of spacers, of which one is shown in Fig. 3; each spacer is formed of insulating material with a conductive layer 19 formed at each end and a conductive layer 20 along its side forming a resistance connecting the end layers, each dynode being electrically connected to the adjacent end layers of two adjacent spacers. Each dynode may be secured to a plate which is clamped between two of a stack of spacers mounted on a ceramic rod which passes through an aperture 18 in the spacers; the plates may also be attached to a second stack of spacers which are similar but do not have the conductive coatings. The resistance of strip 20 may be increased to a desired value of 1-2 megohms by reducing its area by flowing abrasive particles against it. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), each spacer is cylindrical, and in another modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the spacer is elongate with small apertures near the ends for two support rods and a larger central aperture. The input to the multiplier may be ions or photons.
