Abstract
1399237 Ruthenium-impregnated carbon JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO 5 June 1972 [10 June 1971] 19913/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A porous body of carbon or graphite is coated and/or impregnated with a Ru compound, e.g. RuO 2 , by removing gases from the body, contacting the body with a solution or suspension of the Ru compound and heating to drive off the solvent or suspending medium. In an example, a graphite rod was placed with a chamber which was evacuated and filled with a solution of ruthenium acetylacetonate in chloroform. After removal from the chamber, the rod was heated to 100‹ C. to remove the chloroform and then to 300‹ C. to decompose the Ru compound to Ru and/or RuO 2 . Other suitable Ru compounds which may be deposited, possibly from aqueous solution are [RuCl(OH)(NH 3 ) 4 ]Cl.H 2 O; RuNO(NO 3 ) 2 ; RuCl 3 ; and sodium ruthenate. The deposited compound may be decomposed by treatment with NaOH solution or acetic acid.
