Abstract

1395523 Prospecting BARRINGER RESEARCH LTD 2 May 1972 [7 May 1971] 20333/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division G1] Geological mapping is facilitated by chemical analysis of the organic constituent of airborne particles which are characteristic of geological formations in the earth. Atmospheric particles are continuously collected from known geographic locations and concentrated in a cyclone 12 or electrostatic precipitator mounted in an aircraft. The concentrated particles are then transferred into a stream of inert gas from a cylinder (Figure 1) and carried thereby through a tube 16 heated by an element 17 to a temperature between 100‹C and 700‹C. At the lower temperatures, any hydrocarbons are vapourised and may then be analysed by gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy or flame ionisation. At higher temperatures, the organic particles are pyrolised, breaking down into simpler compounds and vapours which are separated from the inorganic ash by a trap 18 or filter 24. The organic constituent is then analysed by atomic absorbtion techniques (Fig 3) or optical emission techniques (Figure 1). In Fig 3, an organic film forms on a cooled crystal 26 and infrared light passed through crystal 26 picks up absorbtion lines from the film which are detected by an infrared spectrometer 29. In Figure 1, a microwave generator 21 produces a plasma 22 in cavity 20 which produces emission lines that are analysed by a spectrometer 23. Changes in quantity of specific organic constituents merely due to changes in meteorological conditions are allowed for by normalising the measurements against either the total particulate concentration or the total organic concentration.
