Abstract

1392269 Heat treating steel rod CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES - CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 31 Oct 1973 [31 Oct 1972] 50528/73 Headings C7A and C7N Rod leaving the finishing stand of hot mill is superficially quenched so that the core remains austenitic preferably having a temperature of 850‹C at the end of the quenching step, while the surface layer is transformed to austenite or bainite; it is then allowed to cool at such a rate that the core transforms to ferrite and carbides while the transferred heat tempers the surface layer. Quenching may be by water or a solution or suspension of a mineral salt or surface active agent.
