Abstract
1391903 Ultrasonic apparatus NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 5 April 1972 [6 April 1971] 8847/71 Heading H4D A scanning transducer assembly includes a carriageway rotatable about a first axis fixed relative to a support structure, a first carriage on the carriageway which carries a rotary bearing rotatable about a second axis wherein the carriage is moved along the carriageway and its angular inclination is correspondingly varied to maintain the intersection of the first and second axes fixed and wherein an ultrasonic transducer is journalled in the rotary bearing to project energy along said second axis. Transducer assembly 20 is mounted on a carriage 15a running on an arcuate track 14. A further carriage 15b running on a parallel track 14 carries a counterbalance 21b. In the normal operating mode clutch 41 is disengaged and clutch 43 is engaged. Shaft 42 is thus held stationary by contact with fixed shaft 44, thus holding main shaft 12 fixed. Rotation of motor 31 drives main gear 28 fixed to bush 33 and thus plate 11 rotates. Since shaft 12 is fixed, helical wheels 26a, 26b engage worm 25 to rotate pinions 27a, 27b which engage racks 22a, 22b. Thus the carriages 15a, 15b are driven at equal speeds in opposite directions along the tracks 14. The combined rotations and variation in angle # produces a spiral scan of the transmitter beam. Potentiometers 48, 49 provide signals fed to the display unit 4 to provide a picture of a surface inside the body under investigation, the depth of the surface being selected by range-gating the echo signals. At the end of the arcuate excursions of the carriages 15a, 15b the potentiometers 48, 49 disengage clutch 43 and engage clutch 41. Shaft 12 (and thus worm 25) is now driven to rotate synchronously with the helical wheels 26a, 26b thus halting further movement of the carriages. The processing of the signals from potentiometers 48, 49 may be such that the investigated surface is planar and to ensure that the received signals are displayed at constant spacing along the spiral scan.
