Abstract

1391189 Confining and removing dust in industrial operations IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 480204/72 Heading F4X A hopper 1 through which particulate, "dusty", bulk materials are discharged (e.g. when unloading a railway wagon or ship's hold), has at its upper end a dust control means 3 for confining and removing the dust arising during the discharging operation. The dust control means comprises a substantially horizontal grid 4 which is surrounded by one or more chambers 5 (shown as of generally triangular cross-section) into which the dust is drawn (e.g. by a fan, not shown) via openings 6 above the grid 4 and openings 7 below the grid. Dust extraction from the chamber(s) 5 is via one or more critical velocity slots 8 and a dust extraction system 9. The slot(s) 8 can be altered in size allowing the air and dust removed to be so controlled (e.g. according to the type of material being discharged) as to allow most of it to settle on an inclined surface of the chamber(s) 5 and to slide back into the hopper without forming a dust cloud. Above the control means 3 may be provided a hood 2 having one or more openings therein sufficient only to allow the insertion and withdrawal of a crane grab serving the hopper. These openings may be provided with an air curtain. The hood also has critical velocity slots 8 (similar to those in the control means 3) connected to the dust extraction system 9.
