Abstract
1386314 Heating liquids in bulk PATENTS & DEVELOPMENTS AS 27 Nov 1972 [29 Nov 1971] 54629/72 Heading F4S Apparatus for heating liquid, e.g. heavy oil, in a tank 10 comprises a tubular heat exchanger 39 surrounded by a double walled casing 12 resting on a support 12 fixed to the tank bottom 11. The heat exchanger 39, which comprises a plurality of tubes 40 extending between distribution and collection headers 38 and 41 within a jacket 49, is supported within the casing 12 by rails 43. Heating fluid, e.g. steam, is suppplied to header 38 via pipes 29, 30 and is discharged from header 41 via a return pipe 42 and pipes 31, 32. In use unheated tank liquid enters one end 46 of the casing 12 through an inlet opening 19 and is admixed with recirculated liquid discharged from upper and lower flow passages 44 and 45 defined between the casing 12 and the jacket 49, the liquid mixture being passed, via a hydraulically driven pump 56, 57, over the heat exchange tubes 40 to the other end 47 of the casing 12 where a portion of the heated tank liquid is removed through a valve controlled outlet 26; the remainder of the heated liquid is returned via the passages 44, 45 to the pump end of the casing. Baffles 50, 51 constrain the tank liquid to follow a tortuous path over the tubes 40. Inlet and outlet pipes 58, 59 are provided for leading hydraulic fluid to/from the pump.
