Abstract

1386050 Web detectors E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 15 March 1973 [15 March 1972] 12460/73 Heading B8R [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for detecting irregularities in a continuous web 10, Fig. 1, moving along a path comprises a shaft 13 disposed above the path and supporting for eccentric movement thereon a cylinder 16 whose outer surface engages the web pressed against the cylinder by a guide 44, and a member 23 mounted for angular movement about said shaft into engagement with the web with an edge and means 15, 40 for detecting movement of said cylinder and said member occasioned by web irregularities. Irregularities in the web, e.g. knots are detected by the cylinder 16 whose shaft 13 is mounted on a bracket 14 which supports a photo-electric receiver 40 projecting a beam of light through an aperture in the member 23 on to a reflecting spot 15 on the cylinder 16. A knot in the web 10 displaces the eccentrically mounted cylinder upwardly jointly with the spot 15 and causes a signal to be generated. Tension of web is controlled or web break is detected by the member 23 whose edge abuts the web surface. Reduced tension or web break cause the member 23 to pivot downwardly whereby a shield 26 on the member obscures the spot 15 and causes a signal to be generated. The signals may be used to operate alarm devices, recorders and/or shut down the web transport device.
