Abstract

1385512 Laminated cement-concrete panels J W ELISCHER 20 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971] 2861/72 Headings B5N and B5A [Also in Division C1] A load-bearing panel comprises a core of foamed concrete and/or concrete containing lightweight aggregate, e.g. foamed polystyrene beads, bonded at each face to an asbestos cement facing sheet solely by adhesion of the cement in the core to the sheets. The panel is made by supporting the facing sheets in a mould and forming the core therebetween. In order to assist setting and adhesion, the moisture content should be controlled so that immediately after production the water/cement ratio of the concrete is 0À4-0À5 and the moisture content of the facing sheets is 25-30%. The facing sheet may comprise a flexible sheet formed from asbestos cement, cellulosic fibre and silica. The core may in some cases be non-homogeneous, comprising a central portion of foamed concrete and outer portions of either foamed concrete of higher density or concrete containing foamed polystyrene beads as aggregate. Other lightweight aggregate, e.g. vermiculite, expanded shale, may be used in conjunction with either polystyrene beads or foamed concrete. The concrete may contain dispersants and bonding agents, e.g. lignumsulphonate, and setting agents, e.g. CaCl 2 . Moulding of core.-Concrete cores containing foamed polystyrene beads are formed by discharging the concrete from at least one nozzle so that the concrete falls to the bottom of the mould without adhering to the inner surface of the asbestos sheets or the mould and so that the concrete is built up evenly in the mould. The nozzle(s) should be spaced from the sheets and the mould by at least “ inch so that the concrete falls straight to the bottom of the mould. A single nozzle may have a width equal to the panel or may be moved back and forth to ensure even build-up. In an alternative method, the concrete is pumped from the bottom of the mould. These methods avoid disintegration of the material and formation of voids.
