Abstract
1385323 Separating a mixture of two liquids PHIL GILLARD & SON LTD 12 April 1972 [10 May 1971] 13930/71 Heading B1D Two liquids, such as oil and water pumped from the sea following oil spillage, are separated by gravity in a chamber 22 having therein a frusto-conical baffle 20 into which inlet duct 19 extends, respective outlet ducts 23 and 28 for the oil and water being extended upwards, by say 50 feet, to raise the pressure in the chamber 22 thereby increasing the separation rate. As shown the inlet duct 12.. 19 is similarly extended, the mixture being delivered thereto by gear pump 11, but these parts could be replaced by an overhead reservoir. Electric heaters 43 reduce viscosity of outgoing oil. The outlet ducts each comprise upward and downward flow limbs 24, 25 with an anti-syphonic air outlet 26, 31 at the top and a lower outlet 27, 32. Inlet duct 12..19 is similar but has an annular gap 18 in the downward flow limb (Fig. 3, not shown) to release entrained gas. When mounted in an oil tanker ship, chamber 22 is available for oil cargo storage when not in use. Two valves 40, 41 enable solids to be discharged from within baffle 20, and a drainage valve 33 is supplied.
