Abstract

1382842 Handle for wrap-around package IWEMA FORPACKNINGS AB 16 March 1972 12471/72 Heading B8C Two parallel slits 26, 27 are formed in or on either side of the overlapped edge portions 15, 16 of a plastics wrapping to provide an integral handle 31. The edge portions 15, 16 may be superimposed as shown to form a double layer (Fig. 4) or fin sealed and folded down to form a triple layer (Figs. 6, 7, 9). A reinforcing polyethylene, tape, paper or laminated paper strip (33, Figs. 5, 8) may be interposed between the edge portions 15, 16 of a double layer. The layers may be heat welded or glued together.' The wrapping may be of heat shrinkable polyethylene film and the articles may be beer cans 6 as shown. To form a double layer the cans 6 are fed on a conveyer 1 to a pair of intermittently operating plates 7, 8 which split the cans 6 into groups 9 of six cans. The latter are fed on to a heat shrinkable web 12 so that the edge portions 15, 16 thereof can be overlapped by folders 13, 14, heated by air through a pipe 18 and welded together by passage between a baffle 17 and a roller 19. A reinforcing strip (33) may be fed between the edge portions 15, 16 at the folders 13, 14 from a reel (32, Fig. 8) thereabove. The enveloped groups 9 are fed on a second conveyer 2 through a pre-shrink hot air tunnel 4 and then through a device for separating the groups 9. The device may comprise two electrically heated movable knives 22 which completely or partially sever the web 12. If partially severed, the groups 9 are parted by the take-up of a third, relatively faster conveyer 3. Alternatively the device may comprise two heated wires (37, 38, Fig. 10) connected between two parallel chain conveyers (39, 40) to lie transverse to the conveyers 2, 3. The separated groups 9 are then fed through a second hot air tunnel 5 to complete the shrinkthrough the slitting device 25 which may comprise cutters or a pair of vertically movable, electrically heated, L-shaped wires 28, 29. To form a triple layer, the edge portions 15, 16 of the web 12 are passed between a pair of heated rollers (19a, 19b, Fig. 9) rotating about a vertical axis and then past a plough (35).
