Abstract

1382726 Graft polymerization process FOSTER GRANT CO Inc 20 Nov 1972 [24 Nov 1971(2)] 53608/72 Heading C3G An alkenyl aromatic monomer is grafted on to a rubbery polymer in latex form, in the presence of a catalyst and a water-soluble polyalkylene oxide in an amount sufficient to reduce or prevent the accumulation of polymer on surfaces in contact with the mixture to be polymerized. A second polymeric watersoluble organic compound may also be present in the formulation, e.g. a partially hydrolysed polyvinyl ester, polyglycol, cellulose derivative, gelatin or alginate. Acrylic monomers may be grafted together with the aromatic monomer. Examples are given in which styrene and acrylonitrile are grafted on to polybutadiene in an aqueous medium containing (a) polyethylene oxide or polyethylene oxide/ polypropylene oxide copolymer or (b) a mixture of polyethylene oxide with polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose or polyvinyl pyrrolidone.
