Abstract
1381507 Frame joints FORMICA INTERNATIONAL Ltd 9 Nov 1972 [23 Aug 1971 28 Sept 1971] 39353/71 and 45043/71 Heading F2M A corner joint for a framework of tubular material, e.g. plastics tubular material used for constructing furniture and the like, consists of a section of the tubular material, e.g. a rigid p.v.c. extrusion 1, which is provided with a V notch 2, and a reinforcing member comprising two components 4, 5 or 17, 18 which have transverse cross-sections substantially equal to that of the tube bore, are adapted to fit tightly in the bore on opposite sides of the notch 2, and each of which includes one or more limbs, the limbs of the two components having complementary locking formations which are adapted, when the extrusion 1 is bent to close the V notch, to cause the limbs to spring apart and then lock together in interfitting relationship, to produce a rigid corner structure. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, components 4, 5 are interconnected by an integral hinge portion 6. Component 4 comprises limbs 9, 10 between which a limb 11 on component 5 is received when the components 4, 5 are swung towards each other, limbs 9, 10 having transverse bores 13 which receive projections 12 on the opposite faces of the limb 11. The projections 12 have inclined faces 14 which cause the limbs 9, 10 to be sprung apart and then snap into contact with limb 11 as the projections 12 enter the bores 13. In an alternative construction (Fig. 3, not shown) the opposing faces of the limbs 9, 10 have teeth of sawtooth form cut in a direction transverse to these limbs and engageable, when the components are swung towards each other, with similar teeth on the faces of lug 11 cut longitudinally of that limb. Integral formations 7 frictionally engage the interior wall of the extrusion 1. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, each of the components 17, 18 has a plurality of limbs formed on their opposing faces with diagonal teeth which come into alignment when the components are swung together, and the components each have a shape including curved portion 27 and cut-away portion 26 which allows assembly via the notch instead of via the end of the tubular extrusion.
