1381000 Rolling mills WEAN UNITED Inc 12 May 1972 [24 May 1971] 22348/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division B3] Associated with a rolling mill (or a calender for paper or rubber) having work roll assemblies 13 and 14 (Fig. 1a) is a roll changing carriage 44, the carriage being movable by a motor unit 46 along fixed rails 43 and having a supporting platform 45 on its top. Further supporting platforms 62 and 63 (Fig. 5) are located at millfloor level or either side of platform 45, in a direction parallel to the rolling line (Fig. 6, in plan). A sled 53 is carried on the platform 45 and is movable laterally of the platform, when aligned with the platforms 62 and 63. A further sled 65 (Fig. 6) an be coupled by links 66 to the sled 53 for common lateral movement. To remove the roll assemblies 13 and 14, the carriage 44 is moved adjacent the mill and the assemblies are pulled by a motor unit 49 on to the sled 53. The roll assemblies are supported by rollers 27 and 31 (mounted on the roll chocks and on connecting bars 30) as they leave the mill, the rollers co-operating with retractable rails 34 inthe mill. The carriage is shifted by motor assembly 46 until the sled 53 is aligned with the platforms 62 and 63 (Fig. 6). After linking the sleds 53 and 63, the two sleds are shifted laterally by a ram 69, the sled 53 then being positioned on the support 62 and the sled 65 (supporting a new set of rolls) on support 45. The carriage is finally moved towards the mill to allow the insertion of the new rolls (the links 66 having first being uncoupled). The carriage can be used in a similar manner to change the backing rolls of the mill. For this purpose the motor assembly 46 couples the carriage by a hook 71 with a housing 73 (Fig. 5) in which the rolls are supported.
