Abstract

1379085 Devitrified aggregate GOSUDARSTVENNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT STEKLA 5 Oct 1972 45964/72 Heading C1M A process for producing an aggregate or filler comprises (a) mixing a molten metallurgical slag with one or more inorganic materials, (b) founding the mixture to form a molten vitreous mass under oxidifying conditions and simultaneously foaming the mass by oxidative combustion of a jet of fuel in the mass, (c) granulating the foamed vitreous mass, and (d) thermally treating the granules so as to devitrify them through substantially their entire mass. The founding is preferably effected at 1560- 1580‹ C. Foaming may be aided by introducing, together with the jet of fuel, a compound which decomposes at the temperature of the melt to form a gas. The thremal treatment in step (d) is preferably carried out at 1050-1080‹ C. in a rotary furnace for at least 30 minutes. The inorganic additive may be sand or an alkali. In a specific example, blast furnace slag, sand and broken glass are employed in a weight ratio of 7 : 6 : 1. The filler produced is white unless a non-white filler, e.g. Co 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , NiO, is added.
