Abstract
1377910 Making magnetomotive devices R E PHELON CO Inc 18 April 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 18776/73 Heading B3A A magnetomotive device, e.g. a flywheel magneto, is manufactured by encapsulating a pole-shoe magnet group 8, Fig. 1, in a non- magnetic body having an axis of rotation with pole-shoe surfaces lying on an arc about the axis of rotation and serving as surfaces of flux emanation, forming the surfaces flush with the final diameter of the non-magnetic body, and removing webs 18 joining pole-shoe portions 12 of the magnet group to magnetically separate the pole-shoes. The magnet group 8 comprises a plurality of stacked ferromagnetic laminations (10), Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), fastened together by rivets 11. Leg portions 13 of the laminations define a cavity for receiving a permanent magnet 14 securely retained by tongues 15. A flywheel 32 is cast about the magnet group 8, bores 16 providing means for registration of the laminations, by die-casting. A bore (34) and keyway (36), Fig. 4 (not shown), are formed to fit an engine drive-shaft and radially extending cooling fins (38), Fig. 5 (not shown), are formed on the surface of the flywheel. Flashing is trimmed from the flywheel by stamping and the surfaces of the pole-shoes are rendered flush with the outer surfaces 29 of the casting. The web 18 is then removed by broaching, or preferably drilling out hub portion 22 to leave a bore 44. The bore may then be filled with non-magnetic material. The pole-shoes 12 are thus magnetically separated and serve as surfaces of flux emanation for magnetic linkage with a coilcore group of a stator (not shown) adjacent the rim of the flywheel.
