Abstract

1377737 Crosslinking polyolefins DOW CORNING Ltd 7 July 1972 [15 July 1971] 33282/71 Heading C3P Polyolefins are crosslinked by exposing to ultra violet radiation and/or to a temperature above 130‹ C. in contact with a silane of formula R m X 3-m SiGO.CO.N 3 where R is a C 1-20 hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation; X is bromine, chlorine, fluorine, C 1-4 alkoxy or alkoxyalkoxy, or an acyloxy radical of less than 5 carbon atoms; G is a C 1-12 divalent organic radical consisting of carbon, hydrogen and optionally oxygen in ester or ether linkage; and m is 0, 1 or 2; and thereafter contacting the product with water in the presence of a metal carboxylate, a titanium ester or a titanium chelate. The polyolefin may be polyethylene, polypropylene or an ethylene/propylene ethylene/butylene or propylene/2-methylpentene copolymer. The metal compound may be dibutyl tin diacetate; dibutyl- or dioctyl tin dilaurate; stannous acetate or octoate; lead or cobalt naphthenate; zinc octoate; iron 2-ethylhexoate; tetraisopropyl, tetrabutyl or tetranonyl titanate; or bis-(acetyl acetonyl)diisopropyl titanate. In examples (1) polyethylene and (2) polypropylene are mixed with 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl azidoformate, and (3) polypropylene is mixed with 3-trimethoxysilyl propoxyethyl azidoformate and the products are immersed in boiling aqueous emulsions of dibutyl tin dilaurate.
