Abstract

1376684 Photo-electric testing COULTER ELECTRONICS Inc 10 Oct 1972 [14 Oct 1971] 46659/72 Heading G1A [Also in Division F1] A cuvette for photometric analysis of a sample comprises a transparent cylinder 28 Fig.3 having upper and lower cylinder heads 76, 64 with central ports 94, 74, a hollow probe 68 depending from the lower port and a free piston-like cylindrical member 84, disposed within the cylinder and having an outer diameter less than the inner diameter of the cylinder 28 by a capillary degree, the member 84 being shaped sealingly to engage O ring 82 which forms an upper valve seat, but to engage the lower cylinder head in a manner permitting the flow of gaseous and liquid fluids through the port when so engaged. The housing around the cuvette includes a lamp source 50 for directing light of a wavelength determined by filter 18 through the cuvette to a photo-cell 26. The cuvette operation is controlled by the programmed application of a vacuum or pressure to the top port, an initial application of gas under pressure serving to mix the sample before it is drawn into the cuvette by a succeeding vacuum, and a final application of pressure serving for scavenging. The member 84 and the cylinder heads may be of carbon.
