Abstract

1375876 Synthetic resin laminates BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 29 March 1972 [5 April 1971] 14707/72 Headings B5N and B5A [Also in Division B2] A laminate comprises at least one layer A which contains more than 20% by weight of a polyphenylene oxide where n is 10<SP>3</SP> to 10<SP>1</SP> and at least one layer B which contains more than 40% by weight of polymerized units of styrene. Layer A may be a mixture of the polyphenylene oxide and impact resistant polystyrene. Layer B may be a homopolymer of styrene or a copolymer with acrylonitrile, acrylates, methacrylates, maleic anhydride or α-methylstyrene and may be modified to improve its impact resistance by blending a rubber, e.g. polybutadiene, into the polymer. The laminates may be prepared by coextrusion (the layers being united within, or shortly after passing through, the die), coating layer A with a solution of layer B, extruding or injection moulding a melt of layer B on to layer A, or by combining preformed sheets. Layer arrangements AB, ABA and BAB are disclosed. The extrusion may be effected from a sheet die with the layers pressed together by rollers, or from an annular die when the layers are pressed together by compressed air.
