Abstract

Screw motors; operated by fluid friction; radiat-flow (unbladed) type; working-fluid supply.-A turbine, operated by fluid friction and adapted to act conversely as a compressor, comprises a rotor 3, Fig. III., formed of two cones 30, 31 of different pitch having a space between them divided by a number of similaaÀ tapering helical vanes 42. 43 only two of which are, shown in Fig. III.) into helical-spiral conduits 44 which progressively increase in cross-sectional area from the base towards the apex, and also progressively approach the axis. When operating as a turbine, fluid is supplied to the conduits 44 through stator nozzles 64, Figs. III. and VI., and discharged at the apex end 37, where the linear velocity is less rapid. The vanes 42, 43 may extend only partly across the space between the cones 30, 31, and may be formed on the outer cone, Fig. VIII., on the inner cone, Fig. IX., or on both, Fig. X. The fluid conduits 44 may take the form or flat-spiral passages 404. Fig. XI., increasing in cross-sectional area from the motive-fluid inlets 405 towards the axis. Fig. II. shows a multi-stage turbine, which may comprise five rotors 3 of the kind shown in Fig. III. connected in series, supplied with combustion products from a furnace 12 fed with compressed air by a multi-stage compressor of the same type, which may comprise four rotors 5, Fuel is supplied by a pump 16 to a nozzle 18 in the air-inlet pipe 13 of the furnace 12, the combustion products being led to the first turbine unit 3 through a pipe 21 and a stator member 4.
